| Programme Objectives |
An understanding of psychology is essential for those wishing to pursue a career in the public sector, particularly if they wish to work with people in the caring professions, for example; in education, social services, police and legal work, nursing and those professions supplementary to medicine. A knowledge of psychology and human behaviour is also of great value to those seeking careers in management, commerce and the media.
Psychology is a valuable subject with relevance to everyday life. It covers not only internal mental events (cognitive and biopsychology), but the complex ways in which people interact with one another and why they might behave in a particular way (social psychology). Developmental psychology is relevant to a good understanding of children and the development of their behaviour and ways of thinking. Studying mental health is relevant to keeping mentally healthy as well as dealing with some mental health problems (psychopathology) and understanding some of their treatments. |
